Sheldwich Memorial

The memorial stands in the eastern part of the churchyard of St James in Sheldwich.

It bears the following inscriptions.


To the Glory of God and in Gratitude to our Brothers who laid down their Lives for their Country in the Great War 1914 – 1918. In defence of the Sacred Cause of Liberty, Civilization and Righteousness which they so gloriously upheld, this memorial is erected.”

The information given on the memorial is very detailed. For each name the Rank, Regiment (or Ship), date and place of death are given.

The same information is also listed on a brass plaque inside the church. [UKNIWM Ref: 16211]

This plaque includes the name of a further casualty, W.G. DIXON, who is buried in the churchyard but is not listed on the main memorial. (William George DIXON died on the day before the armistice).


In addition to the memorials, there is a “Roll of Honour” book in the church for all those lost. [UKNIWM Ref: 41208]
