William George DIXON 1894 - 1916
1. William George DIXON, born Dec 1894 in Ringwould (Kent), census 1901 at The Street, Little Mongeham (Kent), resided 1915 at Wilgate Green Farm, Throwley, Nr Faversham (Kent). Enlisted 8 Nov 1915 at Faversham, Private 10864 - 12th Btn. Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). After service in the UK he developed chest problems. A report by a military medical board on 16 May 1916 held at Royal Hospital, Chelsea stated: “Originated about 15 Mar 1916; he admitted having pain in chest & cough; is sallow, unhealthy & wasted looking; temp still unstable, pulse 96 regular; result of military service conditions at home; permanent; capacity lessened totally for 6 months then re-examine”. He was discharged 1 Jun 1916 as no longer physically fit for war service - (King's Regulations - para 392 - clause xvi) - "Pneumonia", and was granted a conditional pension of 25/- per week for 6 months, subject to re-examination after that time. On 19 June 1916 he was released from Cambridge Military Hospital with “£1 (one pound) advance and a suit of plain clothes” to proceed to his home address at Halk[e] Cottage, North Street, Sheldwich, Nr Faversham (Kent), where he was to “await instructions as to his final discharge”. A further Medical Board held on 1 November 1916 reported “no incapacity” but also recorded the fact that he was “not earning”. He died at Sheldwich 10 Nov 1918 of Phthisis [Tuberculosis] - Age given as 21, [he was actually about 23 or 24], and was buried 16 Nov 1918 at St James, Sheldwich (Kent).
