Enlisted July 1916 in Dover - Royal Engineers (Inland Water Transport), transferred October 1917 to Royal Garrison Artillery - 194248 Gunner - 350th Siege Bty. - Royal Garrison Artillery. He was Killed in Action 3 August 1918 - Aged 35, and was buried at Solferino Farm Cemetery, near Ypres – Grave number II.D.10,
He married Lucy Daisy L. GRAVES, 27 Mar 1910 at St Andrew, Buckland, Dover (Kent), born Abt 1890 in West Cliffe (Kent), census 1901 at 15 Pioneer Road, Buckland, Dover (Kent). John and Lucy had four children.
Lucy subsequently remarried to Albert V. ELGAR 1 November 1922 at Holy Trinity, Westmarsh. They lived at Wass Farm, Westmarsh (Kent).
